The dread in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom state capital, is evident, as suspected cultists have given the principal of Uyo High School, Mr. Michael Iwok, a 24-hour ultimatum to recall their suspended members back to school or suffer terrible repercussions.

Some fetish objects, including fresh pepper, palm oil droplets, peeled cooked egg, palm front, a piece of red fabric, tied rope, and a ten naira cash, were left in the principal’s office on Thursday as a warning.

Similar artifacts, as well as other inscriptions, were found at the door to Senior Secondary 3 courses, thought to have been left by suspected cultists.

The state government has ordered the school’s immediate shutdown in order to avoid any kind of attack.

Dr. Ekaette Ebong Okon, Chairman of the Akwa Ibom State Secondary Education Board (SSEB), announced the school’s closure today in Uyo.

Our correspondent learned that the issue began when the school authorities had suspended five students suspected of being cults.

Some senior secondary two pupils have also been upset since they were unable to meet the school’s requirements for promotion to senior secondary three.

Investigations establish that these two groups of students were responsible for the mayhem in the classroom on multiple occasions.

Contacting the police about the incident, SP Odiko MacDon, the Police Public Relations Officer, said the school’s closure was due to threats from suspected cultists and had nothing to do with the police.

”Government close down school, how that one come bother me,” he stated in pidgin English.
