Manchester United kicked off their Premier League season with a 5-1 victory over Leeds United, with a Bruno Fernandes hat-trick welcoming fans back to Old Trafford in style.
After Mason Greenwood spurned an early opportunity for the home side, Manchester United drew first blood in the 30th minute, when Paul Pogba played through Fernandes via an exquisite pass.
The Red Devils’ top scorer of 2020/21 finished with aplomb, hitting home through Illan Meslier’s legs to send Old Trafford into raptures. Now firmly on top, the home side continued to press forward, with Luke Shaw in particular driving at the Leeds defence creating several attacking opportunities for his teammates.
The second half began in a frantic manner with a flurry of goals. Leeds levelled the scoreline just minutes after the restart, when Luke Ayling’s unstoppable shot from outside the box flew into the top corner, leaving David de Gea helpless.
The home side responded immediately though with Pogba, who once again showed his class with an inch-perfect pass, sending Greenwood through on goal. In turn, Greenwood showed brilliant composure despite pressure from the Leeds defence to coolly finish past Meslier.
Not resting on their laurels, Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s men ramped up the pressure and found a third goal via Fernandes, who showed another moment of pure class, turning the Leeds defence in the box and firing towards goal.
What looked like a goal line clearance was correctly deemed to have crossed the line, giving United a two-goal cushion.
Now with an insatiable appetite for destruction, Fernandes then completed his first ever hat-trick for Manchester United.
Victor Lindelöf’s defence splitting pass sent the Portuguese starman through on goal, and he smashed his shot into the back of the net.
Pogba then added his fourth assist of the afternoon with a pass into the box to improbable goalscorer Fred, who finished with ease to net only his fifth goal for the club and round off the scoring in style.
